We are looking for eight (8) health-oriented and passionate MD’s to join our team of physicians at InspireHealth (IH). We are expanding our Vancouver Centre as well as opening four new regional centres in Victoria, Abbotsford, Kelowna, and Prince George over the next eighteen months. We are also creating a Virtual Program to serve BC’s remote communities.

InspireHealth is Canada’s leader in programs that integrate health and wellness programs into acute illness treatment.

Since 1997, InspireHealth has provided integrative health and wellness care to over 5,500 British Columbians (BC) diagnosed with cancer. While our programs have had a cancer focus, the concepts are applicable to the treatment of all chronic diseases and the support of health.

InspireHealth’s initiatives are designed to create an optimal cancer recovery environment supported by current evidence-based research. Our medical doctors integrate healthful nutrition, exercise, emotional and spiritual support with a patient’s existing standard cancer treatments for a comprehensive whole-person approach to care. Specific cancer treatment experience is not a requirement for a physician at InspireHealth. Our current physicians all have a background in family practice with a broader interest in health.

Our research indicates that InspireHealth patients may have improved survival compared to BC patients receiving only standard treatment.  We encourage all of our physicians to participate in this research.

Integrative care actively engages patients to take charge of their health. By providing practical programs, patients are empowered to play an active role in their recovery. Healthy engagement has been shown to be associated with improved survival and reduced risk of cancer recurrence.

With the long-term commitment from the BC Government to support the expansion of our vision, InspireHealth has the financial and staff resources to grow and help shape the future of health care.  Our anticipated expansion schedule is as follows:
 

POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Director of Clinical Services, the Physician provides integrative cancer care services to patients, teaches and facilitates patients and their families in InspireHealth programs, reaches out to the community through speaking engagements, liaises with other healthcare professionals and outside agencies, and performs other related duties as required. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical Services

• Provides clinical services in integrative cancer care as per InspireHealth’s guidelines. For example, supporting health through nutrition, exercise, emotional and spiritual support, and medical supervision of vitamins and supplements
• Provides counseling support to patients and their families
• Engages patients to actively take charge of their own health

Teaching/Facilitating/Community Talks

• Teaches and facilitates patient and support person groups in InspireHealth's programs
• Gives presentations, keynote speeches and conducts workshops on integrative cancer care and prevention
• Supervises medical student and resident electives at InspireHealth

 Research

• Participates in the evaluation and development of IH guidelines regarding relevant research on integrative cancer care
• Participates in IH clinical research projects
• Recruits patients for IH and outside agency research projects

Administrative Responsibilities

• Attends medical staff meetings
• Performs administrative duties related to medical staff meetings and medical issues  

Other Responsibilities

• Works with other IH team members on joint projects
• Communicates with and attends meetings with doctors and other healthcare professionals in the community as required
• Liaises with other professional or government organizations related to services provided by InspireHealth
• Provides leadership and guidance on integration issues and scope of practice issues with IH Associate Healthcare Practitioners
• Fully engages in the spirit of teamwork to contribute toward InspireHealth’s vision
• Performs other related duties as required 

REQUIREMENTS

• MD degree
• Registered and fully licensed as a physician in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC at time of appointment
• Enrolled with the Medical Services Plan
• Membership in the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA)
• Minimum two years experience in general practice, or specialty area, in the Canadian healthcare system, or an equivalent combination of training and experience
• A demonstrated holistic patient-centered philosophy and style with clinical skills supportive of patient empowerment and a compassionate presence
• Demonstrated leadership, facilitation, and presentation skills
• Excellent interpersonal skills
• Demonstrated ability to work with integrity, self-responsibility, and accountability
• Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team
• Ability to communicate fluently in English, both written and spoken, is a must 
• Previous cancer treatment experience or experience with complementary medicine (i.e., acupuncture, etc) is not a requirement for a physician to work at InspireHealth, as this is not the focus of our practice. We focus on healthy nutrition, exercise, and stress reduction. We live by these principles in our own lives. Therefore, modeling health and well-being is a requirement for a physician at InspireHealth.

Clinical

• Paid training for successful candidates
• Extended one-on-one consultations with patients (currently between 30 to 90 minutes)
• Low patient volume per day (our doctors generally see from 5 to 7 patients per day)
