September Research Updates

Inspire Health Event Calendar September 1, 2010

Dear Reader,

In this month’s issue, there are several studies highlighting the importance of a vegetable based diet (did you know that broccoli can improve your chances of survival from bladder cancer? Or that increasing your intake of vegetables can decrease your risk of developing pancreatic cancer?).  In addition to these studies, Dean-Klower et al. found acupuncture to be beneficial for advanced cancer patients. Tian and colleagues found that comprehensive therapy with Traditional Chinese Medicine was beneficial for patients with primary hepatic carcinoma and Yun and associates found that Korean red ginseng can protect against cancer in men. In our study of the month, McNeely et al. found exercise can help increase the range of shoulder movement in women with breast cancer, and in a similar vein, Waltman et al. found that strength training may prevent loss of bone mineral density in postmenopausal breast cancer survivors who are at risk for bone loss.

In addition to all of this, this month’s bonus features include topics ranging from metabolic syndrome and breast cancer to mammographic density and vitamin D, alcohol consumption and breast cancer risk, and the association between nitrate and breast cancer risk. The prognosis of patients with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma who smoked, drank alcohol, or were obese was also considered, as was the connection between pre-diagnostic vitamin D status and the development of pancreatic cancer.
