February Research Updates

Inspire Health Event Calendar February 1, 2011

Dear Reader,

In this month’s issue, Lebret and colleagues found that having written guidance on diet and exercise was helpful for prostate cancer patients. Nakaya and associates found that men whose partner had breast cancer were at an increased risk for depression requiring hospitalization. Nechuta et al. found that vitamin supplement use within the first six months of diagnosis of breast cancer reduced the risk of mortality and recurrence. Liu and associates found that educating early stage breast cancer patients about the reality of the risk of recurrence helped to alleviate patient anxiety. Collinge and colleagues found that using a DVD to learn about basic massage techniques enhanced family caregivers’ sense of self-efficacy and increased patient comfort, which improved the quality of the relationships between the caregivers and patients, thus increasing quality of life for both patient and caregiver. In our study of the month, Schmitz et al. found that a program of slowly progressive weight lifting did not increase the incidence of lymphedema in a group of breast cancer survivors.
