Habits, we all have them. Some of mine help me thrive in life, such as exercising first thing every day, while others are not so helpful for me, such as my time surfing the internet. All of us have habits that serve us and ones that do not. I stumbled across “Big Ideas on Optimal Living” on keystone habits and it stuck deep with me. Why? Here’s the premise: What habit do you have, that when you change or incorporate into your lifestyle, will have the greatest positive impact on your life? What is the first thing that comes to mind when you consider this question?

Reduce stress? Go outside more often? Plan your weekly meals? Work up a good sweat? In an instant, I knew my keystone habit was my time surfing on the internet (I can hear you some of you nodding with me on this one). It hinders my ability to focus on my task at hand and to get things accomplished in my life. What have I done to manage this?

– I downloaded an app to block specific websites for periods of time

– I put a timer on for 5-10 minutes to give myself permission to cruise my guilty pleasure websites

– Placed a note on my computer with the quote “How does this serve me?” as a friendly reminder to stay with my new habit

– Created a daily schedule to create space to do the things that bring me pleasure, such as reading books, practicing yoga, and scheduling dates with friends

– Practice loving-kindness and compassion when I spend more time online than I wish

Reflect for a moment – what is your keystone habit? What is the one thing you can change that will have the greatest positive impact on your life. Challenge yourself to one week of making the steps towards implementing your keystone habit.
