An Inspirational Patient Story

Inspire Health Event Calendar March 18, 2022

Battling cancer is no mean feat. Janet, a patient in Tsawwassen, BC, who completed a 3km Rain Walk two weeks ago, can definitely attest to that. In 2001, Janet received the shocking diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Her brother, Anthony, who only recently passed away from nasal pharyngeal cancer, was her first stem cell transplant donor.

She endured numerous chemotherapy sessions, radiation, and transfusions, only to find out more recently that she contracted endometrial cancer, myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), and lymphoma.

Jane shares:

“After my AML transplant, due to the complications of a weakened immune system, I contracted viral encephalitis, experienced seizures, and was in a coma. After the second transplant, I was again near death and in a coma.”

Janet then experienced severe vertigo – a tumour was found in her brain. She was left paralyzed after both comas and had to relearn how to talk and walk.

“I am truly grateful for the programs and services which InspireHealth provides to cancer patients and their caregivers. For me, InspireHealth provided safe, online fitness and exercise classes during my recovery. Especially during COVID, these online classes were perfect. The instructors provide modifications for attendees at various fitness levels.”

Janet also took part in our gratitude programs, food and nutrition classes, cooking classes, and recipe ideas. Our registered dietitians and clinical counsellors lead online classes as well as one-on-one private zoom sessions.

“Through the support of my medical team, amazing family, friends, and support services such as InspireHealth, I’ve been provided the resources, strength, and courage to fight on. I hope to inspire, provide hope, and encourage others dealing with cancer and other challenges to be positive and do what they can to live to their full potential. I am honoured to walk and fundraise to enable this organisation to provide free programs for people battling cancer.”
