Bryan’s InspireHealth Story

“I was 20 years old, an undergraduate student at UBC’s Faculty of Science and a teaching assistant in Chemistry and Mathematics. Music has always been a huge passion of mine, especially classical music. I was a performing pianist and accompanist for several choirs in the community, fully immersed in my studies and my music.

Several months before my diagnosis, I began experiencing persistent cold and flu-like symptoms, along with migraine-like headaches that wouldn’t go away. In May 2017, one headache became so severe that I had to go to the emergency room and on my way there, I fainted on the train station platform. After a series of medical check-ups and scans, I learned that I had pineal germinoma, a malignant tumour in my brain.

The following six months were a period of intense treatment and uncertainty, as I underwent a biopsy and hydrocephalus surgery, followed by 12 rounds of chemotherapy and 20 sessions of radiation therapy, which tested me in ways I had never imagined.

I learned about InspireHealth through my family doctor at the time of my diagnosis, and I still remember feeling so welcomed upon my arrival at the InspireHealth Centre.

Since my first visit, InspireHealth has been an invaluable part of my cancer journey.  I attended one-on-one sessions with physicians, dietitians, and exercise therapists who created personalized programs for my diet and exercise, while group classes like yoga, cooking, and art helped me express myself and maintain emotional balance.

The LIFE Program further connected me with other patients, allowing us to share experiences, learn about the latest cancer research, and explore ways to live life to the fullest despite our diagnoses. Along the way, the team patiently answered my many questions about treatments, mental and physical health, and navigating life during and after cancer—helping me feel supported, cared for, and more confident facing what came next.

As someone with a science background, I deeply value that InspireHealth’s programs support the whole-person and are evidence-based, helping me face my diagnosis holistically, with confidence and hope.
