Kate's InspireHealth Story

Inspire Health Event Calendar February 11, 2026

Before my cancer diagnosis, I had always been active outdoors (biking, hiking, sailing) but in the years leading up to it, life had slowed down a bit with health setbacks, including a multi-year recovery from a concussion and breaking my wrist.

In January 2025, I found a lump in my breast and by the end of February, I had received my diagnosis. It was a huge shock, and everything seemed to move so quickly after that. In March, I faced major, time-sensitive decisions (like fertility preservation) while attending medical appointments, fielding phone calls, and preparing for time away from work.

My treatment included fertility preservation, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, surgery, hormone therapy, and radiation over the course of the year. I was especially surprised at how much the fertility treatments took out of me, it was almost as hard as chemo. I had expected to have more time feeling “normal” before diving into treatment.

I first heard about InspireHealth from the Breast Health Navigators, a team of nurses who guided me through my diagnosis and treatment. I was drawn to InspireHealth because it offered in-person and online support with nutrition, exercise, and counselling, areas where I was looking for guidance and care.

Once I connected with InspireHealth, I wish I had reached out sooner. The programs gave my days purpose and structure. The exercise classes helped me stay active even on low-energy days, while the nutrition and education sessions gave me valuable and trustworthy information.  Additionally, over the last few months, I have been attending the in-person walking groups, which have been wonderful socially and emotionally.

Being off work meant I spent a lot of time alone, and I often felt lonely and isolated. Connecting with others through InspireHealth made a huge difference. I met people who truly understood what I was going through, and we were able to share advice, experiences, and support in a way that felt genuine and meaningful.  It feels good to be part of a community where we can both give and receive support.

The team at InspireHealth is warm, supportive, and caring. Knowing these services are available has been a huge comfort, even on the hardest days. I feel lucky to have supportive colleagues, friends, and family, but InspireHealth added a layer of guidance and connection that made a real difference in my recovery and well-being.

The fact that it was all available free of charge meant that I didn’t have to worry about additional financial burden while I was off from work and could instead focus on getting as healthy as possible, making better nutrition choices, and being active.

My message to anyone affected by cancer is this: InspireHealth can meet you where you are. Whether it’s emotional or physical support, the programs, workshops, and community can help you feel informed, connected, and supported every step of the way.
