Matt Heemskerk, Chair
Matthew Heemskerk practiced law for nine years at a Vancouver law firm. During his first five years as a lawyer he specialized in aviation law, municipal law and personal injury litigation. He changed practice areas when friends working in the natural health industry purchased a business. Thereafter, he practiced corporate commercial law and intellectual property law. He was counsel to a major Olympics organization, video game companies and entrepreneurs in the health food and supplement industry.
In 2008, Matt had a grand mal seizure and was eventually diagnosed with brain cancer and received treatment at the BCCA and InspireHealth. After surgery and treatment, Matt went through a period of rehabilitation and refocused his life. He now works at the Lawyers Assistance Program of British Columbia as an Associate Director providing the legal community with confidential education and support for concerns such as anxiety, depression, career transition and addiction.
In his personal life, Matt enjoys exercising, hockey, skiing, and healthy eating. He is married to his beautiful wife, Ingrid and they have a son Aidan.
Matt believes that every cancer patient should receive the level of care and support that he encountered at InspireHealth. In 2014, he joined the InspireHealth Board of Directors and is now serving as Chairperson.
Gerry Gramek
Gerry Gramek has been a professional Realtor with Century 21 here in Vancouver for the past 24+ years. Gerry is trained through the Justice Institute in both negotiation and mediation; his expertise as a Realtor has earned him prestigious designations as both a Master Medallion Club Member with the Greater Vancouver Real Estate Board, and a Centurion Award Winner, an international ranking with the largest real estate company in the world.
At the start of his career, Gerry was involved in a middle management position at three local Vancouver hotels. Wanting a change, he moved up to Cassiar in northern BC, very close to the Yukon border. He was involved in setting up a successful employee assistance program in this very remote community.
When he returned to Vancouver after 13 years in the North, he became the Sales Manager for Vancouver Harley-Davidson before launching his successful real estate career.
Gerry has had the privilege for the past number of years of serving on the board of the Vancouver Alano Club. Alano is a worthwhile not-for-profit organization that assists people with substance abuse issues.
In fulfilling his role as a volunteer in his community, he also has acted at various times over the past 10 years as Chairman on two separate strata councils.
Gerry has greatly enjoyed volunteering at InspireHealth over the past six years. It has given him an opportunity to partially repay the immeasurable benefits that he gained through attending InspireHealth as a cancer “thriver”. InspireHealth has provided to him, and he believes provides to others and to everyone whom they touch, a critical element in cancer recovery.
